Are you ready to infuse your crafting with a whole lot of heart? ‘Hearts & Crafts’ is designed to bring you delightful, love-ly art and craft ideas—all with a heart-shaped twist! Whether you're a seasoned crafter or someone just dipping your toes into the creative world, we’ve got something special for you.
Now, before you go grabbing your glue gun, let’s address the (heart-shaped) elephant in the room. If you’re not a fan of Valentine’s Day, don’t worry. This post isn’t about candlelit dinners or sitting in a restaurant with an overpriced menu and awkward couples. Instead, it’s about embracing the universal joy of creativity—and who doesn’t love that?
Let’s Get Crafty!
❤️ - Chop up some kraft/brown-coloured strips for the trunk & branches, then stick the strips down to the greetings card base.
🩷 - I used a heart hole punch & origami paper for the hearts. I punched them in about 5 colors, but you could keep it more simple if you prefer that look.
💜 - Stick these down & write a message to the one you love.
❤️ - Start with a folded piece of card to use as the base for your Valentine's card.
🩷 - Draw a freehand line or squiggle and use a Japanese hole punch to create evenly spaced holes along the line.
💜 - Use wool and a tapestry needle to chain stitch along the holes. To chain stitch, create a loop by bringing the needle back through the same hole, then bring it up through the next hole and through the loop. Repeat until your squiggle is complete.
💌 - Secure the final stitch by threading the needle through the wool to prevent unraveling. Add a loving message and send to your favorite person!
❤️ - Use a standard long pipe cleaner and wrap the ends together, then mould it into a heart shape.
🩷 - Cut lengths of macrame cord (about 12 cm each), fold each piece in half, and loop it onto the heart by pulling the loose ends through the folded end under the heart frame.
💜 - Work your way around the heart, then use a brush (e.g., a WetBrush) to fluff and shape the cord. Finally, trim the edges neatly with scissors ✂️.
💌 - Attach a section of cord to the top and knot it for hanging. This versatile decoration can be placed on a door handle, hung from a mantelpiece, or sent in an envelope to someone special!
🥰 - Use some kraft-coloured card for the basket. Cut a small rectangle and fold it over.
♥️🩷 - For the balloons, cut out 4 hearts in each colour. Fold them in half and stick the folded edges together with PVA glue or double-sided tape to create 3D heart-shaped balloons.
🎈 - Punch a hole in the basket using a Japanese hole punch (protect your surfaces by punching onto a magazine or cardboard).
💜 - Write messages inside the basket using a white poska pen, and stick a mini purple heart inside for extra flair. Tie the basket with baker’s twine and a bow, adding decorative lines to the outside of the basket with the poska pen.
💌 - Attach mini lollipop sticks to the basket with double-sided tape, then secure the heart-shaped balloons to the sticks. Your heart balloon craft is now ready to decorate or send to a loved one!
Crafting isn’t just an activity—it’s a way to share a little piece of your heart. Let’s make something beautiful together!
❤️ - Start with 5 hearts for the wreath. For each heart, you’ll need 8 strips of card or paper (40 strips total), cut to different lengths—20 cm, 16 cm, 12 cm, and 8 cm. You’ll need 8 strips in each size.
🩷 - Line up one set of 4 strips (one of each size) and hold the lower section in place. Bring the top ends down, starting with the smallest first, and staple at the bottom to create a teardrop shape.
💜 - Repeat this process to make 2 teardrop shapes per heart. Stick them back-to-back to form a complete heart shape. Repeat until you’ve created all 5 hearts.
🎀 - Arrange the hearts into a circular pattern. Cut out smaller hearts and stick them to the front and back centres to hold the wreath together. Double-sided tape works great for joining the hearts securely, but you can use a glue gun if you prefer.
💌 - Attach some ribbon to the top, and hang your wreath from a door or cupboard. Love will be all around you!
❤️ - Roll out the air-dry clay on greaseproof paper to prevent it from sticking to your surface.
🩷 - Use a circular cutter to cut out the base of the coaster. Then, gently press a heart-shaped cutter onto the surface to create a heart imprint.
💜 - For the messages, I used letter stamps for baking from @lakelanduk. You can stamp individual letters or assemble whole words by attaching the letters together—this makes the stamping process even easier!
💌 - Once you’ve stamped your Love Heart messages, let the clay dry for 24 hours.
🎨 - After the clay has dried completely, add pastel paints to bring your coaster to life.
Ta-da! Your sweet Love Heart coaster is ready to be gifted to someone special or used to add charm to your home. 🩷🧡💜
❤️ - Start by drawing a heart shape onto a blank card. Punch small holes evenly along the outline of the heart, with a slightly larger hole in the center.
🩷 - Use thread and a needle to create the design. Tie a double or triple knot at the back of the card to secure the thread before starting.
💜 - Begin stitching by pulling the needle up from one of the outer holes and then down through the central hole. Repeat this process, stitching from the outer holes into the center, until the entire heart is filled with radiating threads.
💌 - Once complete, secure the thread at the back with another knot. Add a message to the inside, and your threaded heart card is ready to gift!
This card is as fun to make as it is to give, and the stitching adds a beautiful handmade touch that’s sure to be appreciated. ♥️
❤️ - Start by deciding on the heart design. You could cut out a heart shape to collage onto, but for a fun twist, cut a heart shape out of the card itself. This allows you to collage beneath it without needing a perfectly shaped heart.
🩷 - Use materials like origami paper for the collage. Tear or cut small pieces of paper and glue them underneath the heart cutout with PVA glue.
💜 - If your child wants to send this as a secret Valentine, use a letter stencil and white posca pens to write the message. It’s a great way to keep things anonymous while adding a stylish touch!
Ta-da! Your collage Valentine’s card is ready to send, and it’s a beautiful way to say, “I love you to bits!”
❤️ - Start with a tapestry needle and a long piece of wool or string. The wool makes threading easy, especially for little hands.
🩷 - Experiment with different colours, shapes, sizes, and even letters to spell out sweet messages or "LOVE." Mix and match to create a unique pattern that feels personal and festive.
💜 - Once your garland is strung, hang it on a shelf, a mantelpiece, or even across a window. It’s a simple but charming way to decorate for Valentine’s Day.
This craft is not only fun but also a great way to involve the kids in creating something they’ll be proud of. Plus, it’s perfect for using up leftover beads and scraps of wool. Let me know what you think! 🤔 ♥️💜🩷
