How to Make a Kumihimo Bracelet

How to Make a Kumihimo Bracelet

STEP 1

Fold all threads in the bundle in half to create 16 individual ends. Tie a secure knot at the folded loop. Feed the knotted end through the central hole of the kumihimo disc so that the loop & knot hang underneath, & the long strands sit on top facing you.

On the top of the disc, spread the strands out to match the colour of the thread to the colour coding printed on the disc. Fill 16 of the 32 slots as indicated in the colour coding. (Coding is provided to make the setup process straightforward.)

STEP 2

To make the bracelet, turn the disc so that slots 1 & 2 are at the very top. Take the right thread (slot 2) from the top vertical pair & move it to the right of the bottom vertical pair (slot 16). Take the left thread from the bottom vertical pair (slot 18) & move it to the left of the top vertical pair (slot 32). Turn your disk anticlockwise (see arrows) & repeat the process with the threads now positioned vertically at the top & bottom. To continue: move the thread in slot 6 to slot 20. Move the thread in slot 22 to slot 4. Turn anticlockwise & repeat the process.

Top Tip: Keep your tension consistent & give the threads a gentle tug through the central hole every move to keep the braid tight.

STEP 3

Keep braiding until the bracelet is long enough to wrap around the wrist with a little overlap. Remove the strands from the notches & tie a secure knot close to the end of the braid. Braid the long tail into a plait & tie a knot at the end. Trim off any excess.

STEP 4

Once the friendship bracelet is the desired length, tie a regular knot at the end. Plait the long section, then tie a knot at the end of that section. Snip off any extra ends.

Push the knotted end of the plaited section through the original loop, then pull it all the way through until you just have a small loop at the end. Take that same knotted end and push it through the new loop that you've just made. Hold those two sides tight and pull that first loop over itself. This part looks complicated, but I promise it’s not. Slide the bracelet on, and you can adjust it to the desired length!
